Our Team

Rather than boring old biographies we thought it would be good to let two shining lights of our company tell you about themselves and a typical day within nuyuu. Much more interesting i'm sure you will agree...

womanDAY IN THE LIFE INTERVIEW WITH AMANDA DUNN

Operations and Customer Relations Manager
Nuyuu Fitness Livingston

You’ve asked me to describe my typical day --- I can't! There is no typical day in the life of a club manager in a new and expanding fitness chain! There is a lot of talking to potential and current members, chatting with staff on how we can improve our customer service, and some administrative and operational tasks that need to be done. I also get to do exciting outreach events in the mall, which involve putting unsuspecting shoppers on some new snazzy piece of equipment (like our vibrogyms) and giving them an experience that they really weren't expecting when they left the house for the shops!

My specific duties include chatting to our current members and trying to generate prospective members through networking with local businesses and organisations. I also answering the phone and emails, managing staff and do some of the not so exciting stuff like banking and paperwork!

Getting into the fitness industry and becoming a General Manager was a logical career choice for me. I was the sporty child and it was a natural progression for me to get my degree in Physical Education.

From that point, I went into into personal training, sales, and eventually teaching other people how to be personal trainers themselves. When it came time for a new challenge, I really wanted to step up and manage a whole gym to strengthen my skill set and experience a more operational side of the fitness industry.

The best part of my job is working with like-minded, passionate individuals who want to provide an exceptional environment for their customers to improve their health and fitness in. I also love talking to members who are on a journey to improve an area of their life where I can help them.

Downsides? Hmm... some long hours… and the sad truth that you can only keep some of the people happy some of the time!

I would advise anyone who wants to become a General Manager to get as much experience as you can in all roles of the industry first. This provides a solid understanding of how each part of the business needs to operate to function as part of the team successfully. And - know your local coffee man well - you will need him! Last wise words? Try to keep your sense of humour at all times!

womanDAY IN THE LIFE INTERVIEW WITH ZOE MCCURRY
Operations and Customer Relations Manager
Nuyuu Fitness East Grinstead

On a typical day, I get to work and discuss with the staff on duty any issues relating to people (staff/instructors), premises (contractors, faults etc,) and membership. I check e-mails, do member interaction post classes and gym floor/ take a group fitness class.

I usually have a meeting related to corporate membership, supplier or working with local business on out reach and marketing. In my spare time J I assist on gym floor with member interaction. I talk to members about their training or discuss new club innovations during our tea-time peak attendance. At the end of a day, I come home to my family and have cuddles on the sofa with my daughter before bed.

My specific duties include:

  • Membership Management
  • Premises Management
  • Outreach and local marketing
  • Staff training and objective setting
  • Management of the delivery of business targets
  • Member relationship management

I got into the fitness industry because an interest became a passion and then a career. I have always  enjoyed fitness and understood the benefits. I wanted to become part of an evolving concept in fitness. I was able to transfer my career skills set from a related industry.

What is the best part of the job? The buzz I get from my busy, vibrant club.  Are there any down sides? Simply not being able to take group fitness classes as often as I would like.

What advice would I give to someone who wants to be a General Manager? Enjoy your job as you spend a large amount of your life working. The experience, training and skills you receive in any job are useful even if you don’t see their value at the time.
